SUMMARY: The Summer Camp Lifeguard's responsibility is to prevent drowning and other injuries from occurring. The Lifeguard ensures the safety of campers and staff members by minimizing or eliminating hazardous situations or behaviors and solving on-the-job issues by utilizing effective critical thinking and decision-making skills. The Summer Camp Lifeguard enforces pool policies and communicates effectively why policies are in place.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES & DUTIES include, but are not limited to:

  • Recognize and respond effectively in emergency situations
  • Actively guard and scan the pool area at all times
  • Administer first aid in the event of injury, rescue swimmers in distress or danger of drowning, and administer CPR and/or artificial respiration, if necessary
  • Refrain from socializing while guarding
  • Communicate and enforce all pool policies and rules in a personable and professional manner while providing a high level of customer service
  • Conduct pool inspections, complete pool chemical logs plus safety checks, and report any issues
  • Teach swim lessons or assist in teaching swim lessons
  • Demonstrate proper radio protocol and respond in a timely manner
  • Record daily participation numbers and complete daily cleaning assignments
  • Document all incidents and/or injuries
  • Maintain a clean and tidy workspace
  • Attend and participate in regular in-service training
  • Follow the lifeguard uniform standards including wearing a swimsuit, guard shirt, whistle, and tube while on duty

ESSENTIAL SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:

Qualifications:
  • Must be 18+ years of age
  • Current Lifeguard Certification (includes CPR/AED and/or First Aid) Required
  • Previous lifeguarding experience is preferred but not required - we can provide training if needed.
  • Swim proficiently and be comfortable in all types of water conditions
  • Be willing to be CPR/AED and/or First Aid certified (will be provided during staff training)

Communication & Interpersonal Skills:
  • Able to speak clearly and with authority while guarding campers and staff members
  • Communicate clear and concise information as needed to camp operations staff members, emergency medical service personnel, and law enforcement
      • Be a role model to campers and staff in attitude and behavior
      • Provide a welcoming environment for all patrons
      • Demonstrate leadership, alertness, and problem-solving skills

    Knowledge & Skills:
      • Recognize and respond to emergencies through knowledge and application of lifeguard surveillance and rescue techniques
      • Able to assess a situation and make an informed decision independently
      • Able to work as a member of a team with staff members and management
      • Able and willing to work at a sustained, high-energy pace for an extended time

    Physical Requirements:
      • Able to react to emergency situations by quick movements, strenuous activity, and on occasion assist or lift persons in distress of varying weights
      • Remain alert to dangerous situations while sitting, standing, or walking for various lengths of time
      • Able to stand for up to eight hours each day and to work in all weather conditions
      • Able to climb a ladder of approximately six feet to reach the position in the higher lifeguard stations
      • Manual dexterity, strength and coordination are required approximately 40% of the time to operate equipment such as AED's, water rescue backboards, rescue equipment, lane lines, and pool vacuums
      • Employee is regularly required to speak, hear and use clear vision with or without correction
      • Environmental exposures: heat, cold, dust, noise, chemicals, moistness, dryness, blood borne pathogens, germs; occasional use of gloves and safety glasses

    Work Environment & Additional Requirements:

    The noise level in the work environment is usually moderately loud, and work surfaces are wet and slippery.

    You are expected to perform your position according to Chesterbrook Academy's safety policies and procedures, as well as, federal, state and local regulations. All safety concerns and incidents are to be reported immediately to your director.
